Crochet Easter Bunny Pattern

A crochet Easter bunny is just the thing to welcome Spring. But even though it’s officially Spring, our weather here is still cold and blustery. Until the weather warms up, I’m keeping my hands and mind busy indoors by reacquainting myself with crochet. And since Easter is less than a week away, I’m squeezing in one more crocheted project with this sleeping crochet Easter bunny pattern! This one is tiny so it’s quick. Continue reading

Menorah DIY – Reusable Oil Burning Wicks

This menorah DIY is the second part or our shot glass upcycle. If you’re anything like me, you love the look of a real flame! A few years ago I discovered the beauty of oil burning candles. I previously posted a project on this shot glasses diy for oil burning candles but we’ve since taken oil burning wicks to the next level!

Up until now, oil candle wick options haven’t been overly sustainable. Sure it’s convenient to buy floating wicks, but you end up throwing away the metal tabs or cork disk. Continue reading

Needle Felted Elf: A Coastal Christmas

This needle felted elf will make a cute addition to your Christmas decor!

I recently took a course on needle felting featuring needle felted elves. Needle felting is something I’ve alway wanted to learn! When I discovered that I could get wool roving online, I was excited to practice what I had learned and design my own project. Amazon has a great selection of colours of wool roving and tools by Clover. Continue reading

Free Crochet Frog Pattern – Gabriola Frog

This free crochet frog pattern came about one night while watching The Orville.  I couldn’t help but notice the Frog leaned up against the desk light on captain Ed Mercer’s desk because he always steals the scene! I love Kermit the Frog so the next day I was inspired to make Kermit’s counterpart to adorn wherever I choose to place her.

Only problem was, I couldn’t find a free frog pattern I liked so I had to make my own. You know what they say about necessity being the mother of invention, don’t you?  If you love frogs as much as I do, you’ll be thrilled to get your free crochet frog pattern for Gabriola at the end of this post. Milk Paint DIY – Partners in Grime Planter

This milk paint DIY, my ‘partners in grime‘ planter, is a celebration of 16 years of DIY.

I feel like we’ve come a long way since Hubs first raised his eyebrows when he helped me replace all the ‘perfectly good’ door knobs in my house soon after we met. The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks! It wasn’t until he agreed to help me install a little pond beside the front walkway that I realized Hubs really was a DIY wannabe.

Little did he know what I had in store for him after we wed! Although we’ve only been documenting our DIY pursuits on Birdz of a Feather for a few short years, since tying the knot Hubs has become my one and only ‘partner in grime’. We really do enjoy DIY’ing together. Continue reading

How to Get Milk Paint to Stick to Anything!

I always avoid indoor paint projects because of the fumes. Even with low VOC paint, I don’t want to pollute what precious indoor air quality I have in my basement craft studio – especially in the winter months when I can’t even crack a window open. Did you know that there are no VOCs in milk paint? Because it’s truly non-toxic, I get to keep every brain cell so I can keep dreaming up new projects! Continue reading

Computer Hard Drive Clock

Ever wonder what to do with old hard drives? Then this is the tutorial for you! I got the idea for this computer hard drive clock from my niece. She used to make and sell these clocks for spare pocket change. Since her father (my brother) owns a computer repair shop,  there are always dead hard drives around ripe for the picking.

My wife’s first computer was a PC with a whopping 40 MB hard drive (I’m a Mac guy myself). I have to laugh at that now because these days storage devices can hold many thousands of times more memory – and we can easily fill a 3GB hard drive in just over a year with all our blog photos!

We took her old computer apart for this a one-of-a-kind computer hard drive clock. Continue reading

Shot Glasses DIY – Glam for the Holidays!

This shot glasses DIY is a case of thinking outside the box. An entire box of one dozen to be exact! I was so excited when Hubs found an entire box of shot glasses in the garbage. But he was going to donate them because they had a branded logo printed on them. Consequently, he didn’t think I could do anything with them. Boy was he wrong! And given the time of year, of course I found a way to make them look festive for the season! Continue reading

DIY Wine Bag – Wine Gift Bag

A DIY wine bag is always a welcome hostess gift to show up with something in hand or even at Christmas. In under an hour, you can easily make this last minute in a pinch!

We always seem to have more reusable shopping bags than we know what to do with. So why not upcycle them into a wine gift bag? With the holidays right around the corner, it’s handy to have a wine tote to carry some spirits to get into the spirit. Of course, it goes without saying that it could also carry a non-alcoholic drink instead; don’t forget about those designated drivers!

Shrink Plastic Art from Recycled Plastic

Did you know that you can make shrink plastic art from a recycled clamshell bearing the number 6? Yes, that’s right! You can recycle a #6 plastic container to make all sorts of cool shrink art. And to think I used to toss them in the blue bin until I discovered this fun fact. I had to try it for myself! Just for fun, I personalized my shrink art by converting a real picture; you’ll see how that looks in the reveal.
