We’re popping into your inbox today to bring you these upcycling ideas and more. These are some of our favourite picks of the nest from this year.
Although the year started off with the sad loss of both our mothers, staying creative really does help lift the spirits. We turned our grief into the positive energy with a tribute to our Mom’s by starting a fundraiser for Alzheimer’s disease. Our signature crochet pillow cover, the Kayla pillow, launched a shop where we’re selling patterns exclusively to donate all proceeds to ‘Crochet for a Cure’. You can browse our shop here.
Crochet for a Cure also got a boost from ad revenue. You may have noticed that we’re now running ads on our little blog. The money we raise in ad revenue will also fund Alzheimer research. Every little bit helps!

Planter Projects
I love when a ‘bright idea’ comes together. I finally got over my fear of working with cement and got crafty with How to Make a Cement Planter. However, as I gained confidence, my technique got even better with these cement planter molds.
Keeping with the air plant theme, these air plant pods are a cheerful way to display them; right in the window where they get light!
I don’t know about your area, but for the longest time, wood was in short supply here. However, we managed just fine with this wooden wall art DIY – a.k.a. pallet wood clock upcycle!
My favourite planter project of all time has got to be our pop-up garden toaster upcycle! If you ever wondered how to spray paint chrome, check it out!
Upcycle Projects
My grandmother originally immigrated to Canada from the UK after the war, so I’ve always wanted to paint something inspired by a Union Jack. Painting vinyl fabric was a great place to start!
We love to upcycle so when the International Bloggers Club challenged us with an I ‘Can’ upcycle theme, I came up with this unique can craft project.
Another unique idea was this basketball planter. Now that’s what we call a slam dunk :).
When Canada day rolled around, we got patriotic with this drink station sporting a Canadian flag inspired door.
Fibre Art
The best part of the year was when I made my sister this string art dog leash and bag holder. If you grew up in the 70’s, you’ll remember the Mikey commercial ‘He Likes It! Hey Mikey! Well, that was my sister; she never likes anything I make. But all that turned around with this custom portrait of her dog.
Turns out that they way to my sister’s heart was through her dog! If you’re a dog lover too, check out the post.
Speaking of hearts, this felt appliqué Mondrian heart stool cover is a fun way to stencil in a different medium!
After starting off the year with a crochet project in our Mom’s memories, I really got my crochet on when I participated in the Ontario Science Centre’s Crochet Coral Reef! Bad pun or not, I have to say that I was one happy hooker after delivering my project.
Paint Projects
This DIY jewelry display makes my favourites list because Hubs finally taught me how to use an HVLP spray gun. Can I tell you how fun that was?!
It’s too bad our winters are so long, because I’d want to spray everything! But I found a great way to still paint indoors through the winter with this next project.
Our painted sewing box uses Dixie Belle chalk paint, which is completely non-toxic and safe to use indoors. After learning how to paint with chalk paint for the first time, I can finally look forward to no more migraine inducing paint projects for me!
It was quite the year for donating to good causes. I’m not a big fan of pink, but our pink chalk paint furniture for Breast Cancer Awareness month made me a convert!
New Innovations
How to hang sliding pegboard is the culmination of what happens when Hubs and I put our heads together to come up with a truly innovative storage solution. Our variation on the theme is this pegboard craft organizer. If you’re short on storage space and missed these posts, you’ll want to check them out!
