Shrink Plastic Art from Recycled Plastic

Did you know that you can make shrink plastic art from a recycled clamshell bearing the number 6? Yes, that’s right! You can recycle a #6 plastic container to make all sorts of cool shrink art. And to think I used to toss them in the blue bin until I discovered this fun fact. I had to try it for myself! Just for fun, I personalized my shrink art by converting a real picture; you’ll see how that looks in the reveal.

How to Paint Vinyl – Vintage Steno Chair

Have you ever wondered how to paint vinyl? A few years ago, we were at an outdoor antique market in Aberfoyle, Ontario looking at these funky metal lamps wondering if we could find space for them. As the story goes, they were originally from a psychiatric hospital. What we loved about them were the curvy lines and retro look. Continue reading

Upcycled Kitchen Cabinets – VW Desk!

Today we’re showing you how to turn upcycled kitchen cabinets into a unique VW desk. You know how they say that necessity is the mother of invention? This upcycle is a prime example. After we renovated our kitchen, the craft room was next on the list and I needed a storage solution, stat! Luckily we saved a bank of cabinets from our reno to create a one-of-a-kind desk for the office area.

Medicine Cabinet DIY – Decoupaged Bathroom Decor

Our decoupaged medicine cabinet DIY is the jewel in the crown in our little powder room. It’s a striking decor piece that acts like artwork. But while it adds beauty, it’s also a functional way to add more storage in a small space.

You may have seen the powder room makeover we posted last year. Today we’re focusing on how to build just one of the elements, the decoupaged medicine cabinet, right into a wall. At Birdz of a Feather, we’re all about upcycling so when it came time to renovate our small powder room, we wanted to do it as sustainably as possible. Continue reading

Laminate Countertop Installation

I didn’t think we’d ever do a laminate countertop installation because I’ve always wanted ‘real’ stone. However, installing a laminate countertop without a backsplash turns out to be the best compromise and is the finishing touch in our laundry room!  Our laundry room started out like so many other builder spaces: dark, dank and in the basement.

There’s nothing much we could do about the location. Our house is too small to relocate it, but we can certainly remodel it with beautiful finishes to make it a pleasant space to do laundry in!  Continue reading

Jewelry Storage DIY – Keeping it Tarnish Free

This cabinet upcycle turned into the most amazing jewelry storage DIY because I found a way to keep my bling tarnish free! What’s not to love about tarnish free jewelry?

If we find something in the garbage that inspires us (or even just challenges our common sense to leave it there), we don’t hesitate to try to find another use for it. The worst that can happen is that the project is an epic fail that ends up back in the garage again. But we won’t let that happen on our watch! Continue reading

Hide an Electrical Panel in a Basement

It can be a big challenge to hide an electrical panel. Some electrical panels are perfectly fine hidden behind a metal door. But when we finished our basement and had to increase the size of our the panel even more to accommodate the electrical needs for my craft room and the man cave, it looked horrendous. Continue reading

Soda Bottle Crafts – Soda Bottle Vertical Garden

Soda bottle crafts are a great way to create a unique planter. Here in Canada, as the seasons turn, it can be quite a while before we see green pastures again. It’s a great time of year to introduce a cheerful hanging system. Brighten up your indoor space with plants – but this recycle works perfectly outdoors too! Continue reading

DIY Couch Cover – Spring Cleaning an Ikea Sofa

Use this DIY couch cover idea as an interim solution when you’re cleaning IKEA’s washable slipcover. It also works as a cheap & cheerful permanent slipcover. Now that Spring has sprung, it’s time for a little spring cleaning. Upholstered couches are great, but washable slipcovers are even better! Continue reading

Stained Glass Decor – Winding Staircase Niche

Stained glass decor totally transforms the awkward niche in the corner of our winding staircase. Since Canadian winters are way too long, I found a way to enjoy my pond all year long – by making one in glass. After installing it in the corner of our winding staircase, it became in indoor oasis! Today, I’m showing you some of the details on how I did it so you can add some ‘curb appeal’ to your winding staircase too! Continue reading

Industrial Pipe Shelf for Jones Soda Bottles

This industrial pipe shelf DIY was inspired by a trip we took to Dundurn Castle. On a beautiful summer day and I snapped a shot of a car that was being used for a wedding taking place on the grounds. On a whim, I posted the photo to the Jones Soda site on the off chance they would use it for one of the labels on their pop bottles. Continue reading
