Crochet Can Cozy Skull
Free Pattern
This skull can cozy crochet pattern is fun to make and use because it’s not just flat on the can. We’re 3D’ing it!
ch 31.
R1. 30 sc into back bumps, ch 1 turn.
Crocheting into the back bumps will give you a clean finish when crocheting together the skull with the can cozy.
R2. sc 5, ch 10, skip 8, sc 4, ch 10, skip 8, sc 5, ch 1 turn (34)
R3. sc 5, sc 10, inv decr 2 x, sc 10, sc 5, ch 1 turn (32)
This forms the eye sockets.
R4. sc 12, ch 6, skip 8, sc 12, ch 1 turn (30)
You now have a nose socket too!
R5. inv decr 3, 6 sc, 6 sc into back bumps, 6 sc, dec 3, ch 1 turn (24)
How to Make an Invisible Decrease
To make an invisible decrease, insert the hook into the front loops of the next two sts.
yo, pull through 2 loops.
yo, pull through last two loops.
Rows 6-7. sc for 2 rows, ch 1 turn (24)
R8. inv decr 3, sc 2, inv decr 4, sc 2, inv decr 3, ch 1 turn (14)
R9. sc, ch 1 turn (14)
R10. inv decr 3, sc 2, inv dec 3, ch 1 turn
Rows 11 – 12. sc, ch 1 turn (8)
R13. sc 3. incr x 2, sc 3, ch 1 turn (10)
R14. sc ch 1 turn (10)
R15. sc around perimeter: sc 3 along sides, sc 9 to top, sc 29 across top, sc 9 to bottom, sc 3. FO
Crocheting around the perimeter cleans up the edges so you can sew it onto the crochet can cozy. A total of 12 along the sides is suggested but if you end up with more, or less, be sure you are consistent on both sides.
Nose Socket
R1. mc, sc 2
R2. sc 2, ch 1 turn
R3. incr x 2, ch 1 turn (4)
R4. sc x 4, (4)
R5. inc, sc x2, incr (6)
FO. Weave in ends.
Use a blunt needle to stitch into the nose opening.
Now onto the eyes.
Eye Socket
Make 2.
R1. mc, 7sc
R2. incr in each st (14)
R3. (1 sc, incr) 7 x (21)
FO.
Use a blunt needle to stitch into the eye openings.
Crochet Can Cozy
R1. 6 sc stitches into mc (6)
R2. sc incr around (12)
R3. (incr, 1sc) x 6 = (18)
R4. 1sc, (incr, 2sc) x 5, incr, sc (24)
R5. (incr, 3sc) x 6 = (30)
R6. 3sc, (incr, 4sc) x 5, incr, 1sc (36)
At this point, check to make sure the circle fits the bottom of the soda can.
R7. sc blo: After 9 sc, crochet the bottom circle of the can cozy together with the bottom of skull. It’s much easier to attach it now vs. having to stitch it on at the end with a darning needle.
R8. sc: when you reach the skull, crochet into the white horizontal loops on the skull.
Row 9-19. sc around (36)
R20. sc 14, then crochet through 12 middle stitches of the skull, sc to end.
FO. Weave in end.
Crochet Can Cozy Assembly
Using white yarn, stitch one side of the skelton to the can cozy.
Then stuff through the cheek area to fill it out with fibrefill. Stitch the other side close. Weave in all loose ends.
Since I’m pretty sensitive to cold things, this cozy is more about keeping my hands warm than keeping the drink cold!
As far as I’m concerned, you can never have enough soda cans because they’re so versatile to craft with. Once you’re done with the can, turn it into a soda can bracelet, can art or this amazing soda can craft!
Here’s Skelly in all her glory (or should I say ‘gory’?).
By the way, you can also grab the free pattern for this crochet pumpkin to add to your Fall decor. It’s done in a beautifully textured herringbone! And you’ll find the last, but not least, in this year’s trio of Halloween crafts at this Halloween Gnome post.
We’ve got you covered for Thanksgiving too; check out this crochet corn pattern place card holder!
