Soda Tab Necklace – Wicked: For Good!

If you’ve ever stared at a pile of soda tabs and thought, “You know what this needs? Yarn,” then you and I are on the same wavelength. And so the soda tab necklace was born!

Inspired by Wicked: For Good (part 2 coming out later this month), my mind flew straight to green yarn. My favourite colour is green, so Elphaba and I already have a lot in common -minus the broom and the show-stopping vocals (although I did bust out a toon at the end of our Grinch phone case video).

Armed with a crochet hook and an embarrassing number of soda tabs (collected purely for “altruistic and artistic purposes,” of course), I set out to make a necklace.

Creative Craft Hop

Before we get to the tutorial, it’s time for another Creative Craft blog hop co-hosted every other month by yours truly and Donna from Modern on Monticello! If you are visiting from Donna’s blog, welcome! Wasn’t her ornament stringer hack amazing? Thanks for hopping over!

At the very bottom of this post, we’ll be directing you to the next stop on this venture. But don’t forget to check out the other stops too because you’ll find plenty more ideas. Be sure to drop back in throughout the week to visit them all!

Soda Tab Necklace

This thrifted cone of yarn has seen me through a number of Birdz of a Feather upcycles!

Green yarn and supplies for soda tab necklace

To start, make a slip knot.

Getting started with crochet hook, green yarn and green soda tabs for wicked-inspired soda tab necklace

Overlap one soda tab over another and pull the slip knot through with the crochet hook.

Two soda tabs with yarn and crochet hook

Yarn over and pull up a loop to attach them together.

Two soda tabs fastened together with yarn on crochet hook

Overlap a third pop tab.
Adding a third soda tab to the other two on the crochet hook

Insert the hook through the tab to pull up a loop. Yarn over an pull through all loops on hook to create a single crochet. Continue in that manner until you have the length you want.

Three soda tabs fastened together with yarn and crochet hook

Instead of putting tabs all the way around the soda tab necklace, I decided to crochet an i-cord to finish it off around the back where you won’t even see them. That makes it less scratchy on the neck.

Chain 4.

Pull up loops in all the chains so there are 4 loops on the hook. Loops pulled up from chain stitches on crochet hook with soda tabs underneath

Create the i-Cord

Repeat

  • Now, pull three of the loops off the hook and hold securely between your thumb and forefinger. Yarn over and pull through the loop on the hook.

Beginning an i-Cord; holding 3 stitches in left hand with one on hook

  • Add another loop back onto the hook. Yarn over and pull through the loop.

2nd step of i-Cord; holding 2 stitches in left hand with two on hook

  • Continue in the same manner with the third and forth loop so all stitches from your left hand are back on the hook.

3rd step of i-Cord; holding 1 stitches in left hand with three on hook

‘Repeat’ all the bullet points above until you have the length you want. Remember to give a tug every once in a while to encourage the cord into a tubular shape.

This is the length of i-Cord I crocheted.

Add Fasteners

At the end of the i-Cord, knot and hide the yarn end inside the cord. Then add a large jump ring (I used 14 mm), followed by three smaller jump rings (6mm).

At the other end of the soda tab necklace, add a large jump ring, followed by one 6 mm jump ring that’s attached to a lobster claw clasp.

Reveal

And there you have it; my Wicked-inspired soda tab necklace! Proof that a few humble pop tabs, a bit of yarn, and a touch of green obsession can lead to something magical.

Who needs emeralds when you’ve got aluminum and imagination? It may not help me defy gravity, but it does make me feel like I’ve earned honorary status in the Emerald City. Now if only I could get it to sparkle every time someone says, “Elphaba would be proud.”

Elphaba might have had her broom, but I prefer my crochet hook; it keeps me grounded in the best creative way.

I relearned how to crochet this year because my daughter bought me a box full of Woobles kits. I an not even close to being at your level but I have enjoyed making every one of them so far. My goal is to complete all of them by the end of December. Have a wonderful holiday season and I have enjoyed cohosting the party with you this year.
